The Club, Soho

Back from the beach and straight into the city.

What better way could there be than going to a party in Soho. Even though I like Soho, I haven’t had a chance to spend much time there since arriving in London, mainly because I was interested in getting to know my immidiate neighbourhood first. However I do have the feeling that this is about to change. I enjoy the buzzing atmosphere very much and there are so many bars and restaurants that you can easily go to a different one every night.

I had the plasure of attending the msn-Party, which took place in The Club in Soho. On our way there from the tube station at Piccadilly Circus (Oxford Circus works just as well) I also spotted an amazing hairdresser and made a mental note to go and get the coolest haircut ever. Will let you know if I’ve done so…

The Club is at the end of Warwick Street which is rather quiet and one can easily walk by without noticing. That can be a good thing as it obviously does get very crowded in Soho at times and especially after work you might enjoy to find a venue that is not in such a busy area.

Coming in you find yourself on the restaurant level (I hear the food is very good). But to our surprise we were led towards stairs in the back and then found ourselves in the basement, where the cocktail bar is located. I immidiately liked the decor as it has such bright colours but with the lighting it’s very modern and at the same time still warm and cosy. It also has the most amazing fireplace Not big, just very stylish with its long stretch of a gas flame. I want to have one just like that when I grow up!

The party was great, lots of young people working in the fast moving field of internet business, wine, beer and mojitos.
Nice.
What I noticed was that they first had an corner area reserved for the party, spreading out around the basement after more people arrived. A very clever way to avoid the emptiness of large rooms in the beginning of such events.

The Club is definitely a good recommendation for some after work drinks! Go see for yourself.

Girl’s Night Out

Last night a friend asked me to join her for a movie, which I happily did. I am somewhat of a movie adict - having seen loads and always wanting to see more. I even went thorough certain movie phases: There was the Truffaut-phase, the Dogma-phase, the Wong-Kar-Wai-phase… Don’t get me wrong though, I have nothing against a good popcorn-movie and easy entertainment! However the longer lasting pleasure I get out of movies which are a long way away from Hollywood.

One of my favourite directors is Pedro Almodovàr. I have seen his last five films and some older ones, although I like his more recent work better. They all have been so colourful and touching and especially the women portrayed are often very strong despite their circumstances.
For this movie night we chose Volver which has just recently been released and has been highly praised and critically acclaimed already. It is absolutely wonderful and as always Almodovar’s characters are warm-hearted and fighting for what they need most: love, friendship and family. This longing for warmth is always stronger than the tragedys they have experienced along the way. I left the theatre uplifted and happy!

Anne and I had tried the Odeon at Kensinton High Street and we were happy to discover that we have this lovely movie theatre so close by! If you don’t want to make your way into the city this is just the place to go.

The other good thing about this was that we ran into a very cosy little bar called Sopranos. We had been walking up the street to find a Pub after the movie and suddenly we heard live music. We didn’t hesitate long and went down the few steps to be surprised by this comfortable place! There wasn’t an entrance fee and we learned that they have live music every Fridays and Saturdays and sometimes Wednesdays and Thursdays.
It was just a piano player and a male singer but these two were really good! We were lucky to get a table as there were already quite a lot of people there, but it wasn’t too full - just comfortably. It was exactly the right place to go to after you have seen a good film and want to chat a bit before going home.

bush - Bar and Grill

After having spent the day in the city Tom and I had some time to kill before heading towards the cinema where we wanted to see Lady in the Water. Going home wasn’t really an option as when you’re tired from walking around you can’t get up again once you sat down - try it and tell me I’m wrong.

We therefore decided to go to a bar Tom had been once before and wanted to show me. It’s called bush and I was completely surprised to find it among all these falafel-places and rather casual looking restaurants and pubs up and down this end of Goldhawk Road. I must have walked by without noticing it numerous times! Hidden at the backside of the houses at the street you have to walk through a small passage way to see the entrance. This also takes away the busy street feel and you relax immidiately.

I liked the interior very much. Cool and straight forward with a seperate bar and dining area it was well thought through. Especially the bright red bar stools looked great and were absolutely comfortable. The wine list was very good without being overwhelming for the untrained eye (count me in) and I need to mention that the Semillon Chardonnay I had was chilled just to the right temperature!

We were (unfortunately) not hungry but Tom ordered the Trio of breads with olive oil and balsamico and was very pleased. So we had another round of drinks and were quite happy with ourselves and the rest of the world.

We will certainly be back for dinner!
